Religious authorities in northeast Malay heartland state of Kelantan have announced plans to use popular social media websites including Facebook to preach Islam and explain issues related to the faith.
“Participants who register will become JAHEIK’s agent and can interact via e-Sahabat for clarification and information on Islam,” Che Mohd Rahim Jusoh, director of the Kelantan Islamic Affairs Department (Jaheaik) told a press conference on Festival Islam at Kompleks Islam Darul Naim, Bernama reported on Tuesday, June 2.
Jusoh said the Facebook page “e-Sahabat JAHEAIK” was created to explain issues or problems related to Islamic law or Shari`ah.
Launched last month, the page has attracted 300 participants who registered as e-Sahabat volunteers since it was introduced last month.
“We are targeting about 1,000 members this year,” he added.
E-Sahabat will be officially be launched by Kelantan menteri besar Ahmad Yakob in conjunction with Festival Islam, to be held from June 8 to 10.
Malays, mostly Muslims, make up nearly 60 percent of Malaysia’s 28 million population.
Malaysia offers the image of a model Muslim country, heading towards the status of developed nation with huge buildings, beautiful cities and a fast track economy.
