Scholarship students in the United States and Canada miss their families and the spiritual atmosphere during Ramadan, away from their family gatherings in addition to long fasting hours that extend to more than 16 hours.
Scholarship students observe Ramadan by breaking fast together to tie them to their homes and families. They prepare special programs to be able to perform their daily worship and leave enough time to recite the Qur’an, besides preparing Ramadan meals and studying.
Al-Youm contacted some of these students and asked them how they felt about spending Ramadan away from home. Abdullah Abbas, who is specializing in nanotechnology at Waterloo University in Ontario, Canada, said he couldn’t go back to the Kingdom because he needs three semesters, two academic and one practical training, which extends until the end of August.
Abbas said he misses the sound of azan and misses going to Makkah to perform Umrah with his family and friends during this holy month.
Ala Al-Hakim, who is studying at Everest University in Ontario, and specializes in library administration, said she couldn’t go back to the Kingdom because she has summer school. She pointed out that the feeling of spending Ramadan away from home is indescribable “because we miss the spiritual atmosphere of our country.”
Haneen Al-Jahni, at Marvel University in St. Louis, Missouri, said: “The presence of my husband and children made staying here much easier, but as other scholarship students, I miss the sound of the azan and visiting the Grand Mosque.”
Faisal Al-Mutairi, studying at Missouri University in Kansas, said he had the chance to perform training during the summer, which prevented him from going back to the Kingdom during Ramadan. He misses his parents and misses listening to azaan. Ramadan is very different in the United States, he said.
