Short Description
Muslim leaders have admitted they are ‘frustrated and disappointed’ at being unable to find a site for a major new mosque in a Black Country town.
The Dudley Muslim Association (DMA) has struggled to find an alternative site, after controversial plans to build on Hall Street in the town were eventually thrown out after a long court battle.
They are keen to find a site close to Dudley town centre, but claim there has been a lack of progress over the past six months.
The DMA is desperate to find a location to build a larger mosque as they say Dudley Central Mosque is no longer fit for purpose.
The group first announced plans to move to Hall Street in 2003 but they proved hugely divisive, with hundreds objecting to the proposals.
Far-right protesters even descended on the town, citing the planned mosque as the reason for their visit.
Having wanted to move to a bigger site for more than a decade, the lack of progress has proved a frustration.
Spokesman Amjid Raza said: “From what I understand, there hasn’t been any movement. We have not seen anything that is for sale or available and that is a frustration and a big disappointment.
“For 13 or 14 years we had been working on the same site, people have given their time and resources. Then we had to forget the site. We are still searching, we are continuing to search.”
