Sayf Ad-Deen Qutuz, May Allah have mercy upon him, is one of the greatest personalities in the history of Muslims. His original name is "Mahmood ibn Mamdood", and he belonged to a genuine royal family. Exalted be Allah! Sayf Ad-Deen Qutuz is the son of the sister of Jalaal Ad-Deen Khuwarizm Shaah, the famous Khuwarezmid king about whom we have already talked much in the beginning of this book. It is he who resisted the Tatars and emerged victorious over them (twice) before he was defeated and fled to India. By the time he fled, the Tatars arrested his family and killed most of them and enslaved some of them. Mahmood ibn Mamdood was one of those enslaved by the Tatars and given a Mongolian name of Qutuz, (meaning, ferocious dog). The signs of power and strength were visible on him since his early childhood. Then he was sold in the slave trade market of Damascus to one of the Ayyubids who brought him to Egypt, and he continued to move from one master to another until he finally reached King Al-Mu‘izz ‘Izz Ad-Deen Aybak to become his greatest leader as we have already seen.
We observe clearly in the story of Qutuz the wonderful Providence of Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, The Almighty. The Tatars plotted against the Muslims, and enslaved one of their children, and sold him, by themselves, in Damascus, in order to be sold by one to another until he reached a country which he had never seen, nor, probably heard about in his early childhood, and became, in the end, the king of this country, at whose hands was the end of the Tatars who moved him from the farthest part of the Muslim territories to Egypt. Exalted be Allah who disposes of the affairs with subtlety, and plans with wisdom, and nothing is hidden from Him in the heavens or on earth: {And they planned a plan, and We Planned a plan, while they perceived not.} [Quran 27:50]
Qutuz, May Allah have mercy upon him, as the other Mamluks, received an upright religious education, and was brought up on a strong Islamic foundation, and trained, since his early childhood, in the skills of horsemanship, the manners of fighting, types of administration and ways of leadership. He, thus, was brought up as a strong persistent youth, who loved the religion and honored its sanctities. He was patient, strong and hardy. Additionally, he was born in a royal family, which means that his childhood was that of princes. This, of course, made him self-confident. He was conversant with leadership, administration and rule.
Furthermore, that his family was ruined at the hands of the Tatars made him, without doubt, know well the tragedy of the Tatars. To be sure, the impression of the one who sees an event with his own eyes is always stronger than that of him who only hears about it.
All these factors combined to make the very unique personality of Qutuz, who used to look down upon adversities, and never fear his enemies regardless of their being greater in number and superior in strength.
The Islamic and military education, and upbringing on confidence in Allah, the religion and oneself had a great impact on the life of Qutuz, May Allah have mercy upon him.
