Pilgrimage For Non-Pilgrims
Attracted my attention the authentic Hadith: (Islam is built on five: testimony that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, ….) as how for pilgrimage to be included among them, though it is once lifetime and conditional on one's ability!!
Millions of Muslims worldwide over ages may be unable to perform Haj, even those able to perform it; most of them perform pilgrimage once lifetime.
Generally speaking, performing pilgrimage does not last except for two weeks in all probability.
Why Allah, Almighty makes this casual act of worship, meaning pilgrimage, among the pillars of Islam?!
I believe that pilgrimage's benefits must be reflected on the whole life of the pilgrims. As well, Allah has made some acts of worships for non-pilgrims. This is narrated by Bukhari on the authority of Ibn `Abbas that that prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: (There ever any days the righteous deeds are beloved to Allah than these ten days, that is ten of Dhul-Hijja, the companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! Not even striving in the cause of Allah? The prophet replied: Not even striving in the cause of Allah, except for a man went out for striving both with his souls and money and lost them all).
Acts of worship to be performed at the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah
These ten days are the chance for all Muslims worldwide to observe certain acts to have the reward of performing Haj, even we are non-pilgrims. They are as follows:
1- Every Muslim should be keen to observe fasting the first 9 days of Dhul-Hijjah, especially for `Arafa day, as it is a cause to have your sins for two years forgiven by Allah, as narrated by Muslim on the authority of Abu-Qatadah. We should have been informed that Allah forgives the sins of all pilgrims and hold many of them freed from the Hell-Fire at the day of `Arafa. It is narrated by Muslim on the authority of `Aisha(may Allah be pleased with her) that the prophet said: (there is no day like `Arafa where Allah free too many Muslims from fire). Pilgrims will have their sins forgiven in `Arafa, and non-pilgrims who observe fasting `Arafa will have their sins forgiven as well. How favor and bless it is from Allah!
2- Congregational prayer: maintaining the congregational prayers for men, and observing it in time for women is a must for Muslims the whole year, however, for Satan may overcomes Muslims at sometimes and deprive them from the reward, Allah, by His Mercy, made for His Servants special ceremonies where their hearts are attracted to observe acts of worship, like month of Ramadan, the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Such are precious chances not only for gaining reward, but to maintain it throughout the whole life. Dawn prayer is one of the most significant prayers for the Muslim to maintain at all times in general and at then ten days of Dhul-Hihha in particular. The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) says: (a Muslim going back and forth to the mosque, Allah prepares for him a place in paradise whenever he does). What favor of Allah is more than that?! Definitely, it is a golden chance, do not we feel envy to pilgrims for Allah's promise for them by paradise, where the prophet (PBUH) says: (The proper pilgrimage has no reward but paradise). It is a wonderful chance while at homes. Let not one of us make excuses that he is deprived from observing pilgrimage, every tie he goes back and forth, Allah will prepare a place for him in paradise.
3- Observing supererogatory prayers very much: certainly, pilgrims are offered a great chance for gaining reward by observing the prayers in the Holly Mosque and the Mosque of the Prophet Muhammad. Yet, Allah, Almighty has not deprived those non-pilgrims from being rewarded through observing supererogatory payers at your home in your homeland.
- Night Prayer: it is one of the greatest acts of worship by which Muslims draw closer to Allah. Performing it at these ten days is a meritorious, as many of interpreters explained the oath mentioned in the verse: (By the dawn. And [by] ten nights), Al-Fajr, 1, 2, that they are the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Accordingly, Msulims should hasten to night prayer during these ten days as much as they can and ask Allah's countless favors. Abu-Hurairah narrated that the prophet (PBUH) said: (Allah, Almighty, descends every night to the world sky at the last one third of the night and says: whoever of My Servants would implore to Me, I would respond to him, whoever of My Servants would ask me for something, I would respond to him, whoever of My Servants would ask My forgiveness, I would forgive him). Allah, the Almighty, asks His Servants to implore to Him and promises them to give response. It is the chance within hands, let every Muslim hasten and observe the night prayer without any effort in traveling to pilgrimage or spending money for that. It is not a call for Muslims to stop observing pilgrimage, it is of a momentous standing in Islam, and however it is a call to non-pilgrims to seize the alternatives Allah made available for them for attaining the reward of pilgrimage, if not more, through the good intention and the eagerness to Allah's forgiveness and the righteous deeds. On returning from Tabuk, the prophet Muhammad said: (There are Muslims we left behind in Medina have deserved the same reward you got whenever your walked or crossed a valley. They said: O Messenger of Allah! Though they are in Medina?! The Messenger said: Yes, while they are in Medina as they are withheld by excuse). They were rewarded the same of the strivers for their sincere intentions and excuses they had.
- Al-Sunan Al-Rawatib (supererogatory acts that were stressed and regularly performed by the Prophet): cited in Sahih Muslim on the authority of Um Habibah tat she said: I heard the prophet saying: no Muslim observes 12 supererogatory units of prayers, Allah will build for him a house in paradise). 2 before dawn, 4 before noon, 2 after noon, 2 after sunset, and 2 after evening prayer. Consider how many houses in paradise a Muslim can apply for! Imagine a king promised you a spacious beautiful house at a beautiful place if you make your self available half an hour daily, will you agree or not?! How if it is by Allah, Almighty who promises you by a house in paradise described in the Quranic verse: (Its width is the heavens and earth), Al-`Imran, 133.
Thus, I believe that it is a matter of faith and trust in Allah's promise. No prudent Muslim would neglect this.
